Trachoma is an entirely preventable infectious disease of the eye which is very painful and can lead to permanent blindness.
Trachoma generally exists in the poorest countries, where access to sanitation and water is compromised.
It is a surprise and real concern to many Australians that Australia is the only developed country in the world where this infectious disease still persists.
It continues in a number of remote Central Australian desert communities in WA, SA, an NT where access to good quality water is limited, and good personal hygiene is not the norm.
Help Rotary End Trachoma in these remote Central Australian desert communities through the provision of hygiene infrastructure, access to clean water, and education programs.
Australia is the only developed country in the world still affected by Trachoma.
Government health programs concentrate on screening for and treatment of trachoma once it is identified. Damage occurs over time, with repeated infections throughout childhood.
Rotary’s focus is on the provision of infrastruture and education to prevent these early childhood infections from occuring. Doing so not only prevents the spread of Trachoma, but also other infectious diseases like Rheumatic Heart Fever, ear and skin diseases.
Rotary has workedclosely with the Australian Trachoma Alliance, the Australian Government, and Indigenous community leaders to identify and develop strategies and specific projects to help prevent infections, and encourage good childhood facial hygiene practices.
Titjikala Community Project
A project has been developed to improve access to hand and face washing facilities in the Titjikala community by adding troughs to community infrastructure. The health clinic, the community store, aged care centre and other community services will become involved in both providing hygiene infrastructure, and the education and understanding about what it means to be clean and strong. Everyone living in and visiting Titjikala will have ready access to sanitation facilities, now and into the future.
The provision of this infrastructure will be life changing for the residents of Titjikala.
Rotary District 9550 is seeking $20,000 to enable us to provide water troughs and education programs in Titjikala.
Consultations are ongoing with other communities for the provision of similar infrastruture to support similar needs.
Rotary International District 9550 seeks your help to fund this life changing community hygiene infratructure project.

Dear Supporter, Vicki and I are pleased to advise that all the plumbing works for the installation of six hygiene stations on community buildings in Titjikala, NT has been completed in time for Christmas! These facilities, in conjunction with an ongoing education program will make a real difference to hygiene outcomes in this remote desert community. We wish to thank all individuals and Rotary Clubs who supported Vicki’s District Governor Partner Project in 2019-20. It has been a long road, as the project was delayed by COVID related community closures and staff changes. It is great to see the works completed. Thank you for your generous support for this project! Kind regards, Ron and Vicki Degenhart
